FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a makerspace?

A makerspace is a place where people of all ages have the opportunity to explore their own interests. It is a place where experts and novices share work space, tools, technology, and knowledge. Think of it like a gym–where you can take classes or pay for time using the equipment. Unlike a gym, the equipment includes manufacturing machines, computers, hand tools, and art supplies. Here, you can get creative, pick up a skill, meet new people, start a business, have fun, and experience the personal empowerment that comes when you realize that there are no limits to what you can make.

Why should I come to The Rivet?

If the expensive tools and extensive classes aren’t a draw for you, consider the community that The Rivet has to offer. Here, we connect individuals and businesses with similar interests. People with skills are here for those without. Join us and throw your support behind local businesses, artists, artisans, and the means to personal empowerment.

When can I take a tour of the workshop?

Tours are available during open hours and you can book a time. Keeping users safe is our top priority and unexpected visitors may need to wait for staff availability.

With a Membership or a Day Pass, can I use any tool that I want?

You are required to take a training class for most workshop areas. These classes will give you a safety “clearance” that will allow you to use those areas outside of classes. With a Membership or Pass, you will be able to use any tool while The Rivet is open as long as you have been cleared to do so. Many of our tools do not require clearances.

Do I have to take training classes if I already know how to use the tools?

Unless you have extensive experience using a particular tool, you will still be required to take clearance classes in order to use that tool. If you do have extensive experience, you will be credited a clearance only after a review of our policies and a reduced fee.

Does The Rivet have ADA accommodations?

Yes! Our first guiding principle is Accessibility. We believe that anyone with any background and any ability level can Make Anything. The workshop space was planned with that in mind. Contact us with any questions about how we can help you to access the shop.

Can teens participate at The Rivet?

Minors over the age of 14 can take classes and use the tools and space just like users ages 18 and above. Some classes are restricted by age and they will be clearly marked.

Are there any opportunities for kids at The Rivet?

Yes! The Rivet has a variety of programs available to makers ages 8 and up. Visit Youth Programs to learn more.

Are community events at The Rivet appropriate for children?

We recommend our community events for teens and older unless otherwise listed but as long as you’re with your child, we are happy to have you share the experience.

Will my membership for the Science Center at Discovery Space work at The Rivet?

Currently, there is no relationship between the two memberships at Discovery Space and each must be purchased and managed separately.

Can I bring my friend to The Rivet?

Absolutely! Pass holders and Members are allowed to have a maximum of 2 guests in the shop with them. As long as the guests are not using tools, admission is free.
