As you may know, COVID19 has caused Discovery Space to close both the makerspace and science center to the public. While we have been closed, we have focused on helping our community weather the difficulties that a global pandemic has brought to all of our lives. The ways that we operate and live have drastically changed and The Rivet staff have been hard at work altering our policies and future plans to ensure your safety.

Now, The Rivet is open for reservations on Saturdays from 4:30 PM – 7 PM. These times may expand or be eliminated as we monitor local cases of coronavirus and move along our phased re-opening schedule. In compliance with federal and state recommendations as well as out of an abundance of caution, we are strictly enforcing the following safety policies for anyone using the space:

1. Maintain 6 feet of distance from other people at all times.
2. Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer. Please wash your hands upon entering and leaving the workshop.
3. Masks must be worn at all times.

Upon entering the workshop, makers can expect to be screened for symptoms of COVID19. If you or someone in your home feels ill, please stay home.

Tools are available for reservation during open hours. Each area of our workshop is available for reservation by a single individual or household. To reserve a tool/area, please contact [email protected] with your preference of date and all of the tools that you expect to use. The cost of using the space during these hours is half the Day Pass rate. Admission will be collected at the time of your arrival.

The Rivet is also proud to announce socially distanced classes are beginning. Our first distanced class, Block Printing, was a great success. As we plan for more classes, we are implementing new cleaning policies for tools and spaces before and after each session. Keep an eye out for new classes as they are released.

To learn more about how the rest of Discovery Space is re-opening, read this message from the science center:

Discovery Space is reopening on July 10! In order to reopen safely, we have modified our exhibit floor to minimize health and safety concerns. Discovery Space will be limiting the length of visits and number of people in the building at all times to maintain a safe environment for everyone to enjoy. Find the details below on how you can visit us. Please read carefully and we hope to see you soon!
All visitors are asked to reserve a 60-minute time slot on the day they prefer to visit, using our reservation formThis form can also be found on our website. We understand that this is a much more limited time than you may be used to, but we are confident that this will be plenty of time for everyone to explore our modified exhibit floor in a fun and safe way. For a limited time, non-members will receive a discounted admission rate of $5 for ages 3 and up.
We strongly encourage everyone over the age of 2 to wear a mask; however, masks will be required for ages 10 and up. Upon arriving, you will be greeted by a staff member who will take your temperature and supply you with a mask if you do not have one.
Reservations can be canceled without penalty if you or someone in your group gets sick or has a fever. Please do not visit if you or your children are not feeling well. If you have made a reservation and wish to cancel, please email [email protected]. Current members and those whose membership expired between March and June 2020 will be accepted.
We have made a stronger commitment to sanitize and clean during hourly intervals, between reservation times, to ensure a germ-free experience. In addition to using cleaning supplies approved by the CDC, we will be following a daily and weekly cleaning schedule for the entire facility. Specific exhibits with many of touchable components have their own cleaning protocol. Procedures include the removal of our bee costumes, the removal of all cloth/fabric items, and fewer Legos available, so they can be replaced with clean ones before each reservation.
